Pierre Etaix. Clowns and Cinema 26 October- 21 December, 2006 As well as being part of the circus tradition, clowns have always been connected with the cinema, especially burlesque cinema. Most also have strong associations with music-hall. Here, Pierre Etaix lovingly pays tribute to clowns, retracing their history and pointing out connections between them via toys, dolls, and small sculptures made by Etaix himself which he places in cleverly lit miniature period settings. François Delebecque. Photographs and Children's Books 7 November- 25 November, 2006 "Photography gets close to reflecting a 'Reality' that is the 'Real Truth' for children. Through poetic scenes staged with a teddy bear or miniature boats, I try to show children another reality in which imagination, poetry and humour gently lead them to think differently about the world around them. I also want to bring an element of doubt into their perception of reality, to show them the way to an imaginary world..." François Delebecque Curator : Jean-Pierre Soares. Galerie En Marge |

Didier Lefèvre. Le Photographe October 23 - December 29, 2006 "Emmanuel Guibert and I were neighbours in Paris when we were growing up. I became a photographer, while Emmanuel Guibert began working on his first comic strip. In 1986, I made my first trip to Afghanistan. It was a tough journey and in many ways a voyage of initiation. Emmanuel found that it had all the ingredients for a graphic novel: a country that is important in contemporary history, exceptional characters (the Afghans themselves, the "French Doctors" with a woman in charge, etc). Emmanuel wrote a script based on my story. Then the plates were sent to Frédéric Lemercier (another childhood friend of Emmanuel's), who made photos and drawings, and then coloured the drawings. Many of the members of this 1986 expedition have remained my friends, and thanks to the graphic novel, they have also become friends with Emmanuel and Frédéric." Xavier Roy. Book of the Living 9 November - 30 November, 2006 Taking inspiration from the ancient Egyptian Book of the Dead about mummification and rituals of the afterlife, Xavier Roy proposes a Book of the Living describing daily life in modern-day Egypt. In collaboration with art director Maurice Coriat, a selection of photographs has been made in view of producing such a book. This exhibition is a "work in progress" showing different proposals for layouts based on the same set of photographs. The exhibition shows the interplay between the work of a photographer, Xavier Roy; that of an art director, Maurice Coriat; and that of a writer, Annelise Roux. Curator : Francine Grünwald. Tendance Floue. Are We? 8 november - 25 november, 2006 The photographers who make up the group Tendance Floue are Pascal Aimar, Thierry Ardouin, Denis Bourges, Gilles Coulon, Olivier Culmann, Mat Jacob, Caty Jan, Philippe Lopparelli, Meyer, Bertrand Meunier, Patrick Tourneboeuf, and Flore Aël Surun. Their book, Sommes-Nous? (Are We?), can be regarded as a long "sentence" made up of images, conjuring up a complex and troubling world in which man is the main player. The photographs portray places marked by history: a mysterious, unreal moonscape, spaces devoid of life, faces revealing a variety of feelings. Multiple worlds confront one another, contrasts emerge, and the question "Who are we?" remains hanging in the air. Curators : Mat Jacob et Philippe Lopparelli. Catalogue published by Naïve. Anne-Lise Broyer & Nicolas Comment. Fading 7 November - 14 December, 2006 This project began with the idea of recreating emotional situations in Prague described by the writer Roger Vailland in a book published by Aventinum, a Czech publisher, in 1927. Anne-Lise Broyer and Nicolas Comment describe Vailland's journey through the capital and its outskirts, indicating on a map all the places mentioned in his story and that of his friend, the Czech painter Joseph Sima. Slowly, a kind of "topography" emerges, punctuated by photographs gleaned by the couple. The project was put together in 2005 during an artist-in-residence programme . Curator : Madé. Ryan McGinley 28 October - 2 December, 2006 These photographs were taken in the summer of 2005. For two months, Ryan McGinley traveled across the United States in a van with a group of friends he photographed daily. McGinley has always talked about wanting to photograph the United States as a tribute to American photographers like Robert Frank and Richard Avedon, and in the tradition of American road trips and road movies. This exhibition celebrates freedom and escaping the constraints of reality, with beautiful American landscape as a backdrop. Curator : agnès b. Catalogue published by Galerie du Jour. Édouard Levé : America 2 November - 2 December, 2006 "America" is about a 10,000-kilometre car journey Édouard Levé made to seventeen American cities that have the same names as foreign cities. This strange journey reflects a desire to discover an America that is different from its fictionalized representations in the cinema and on television. The photos depict, in a methodical, almost topographical way, America's cities and their inhabitants, but they never invade their privacy. They confine themselves to the kind of public spaces that are accessible to any idle visitor. Curator : Matthieu Charon. Catalogue published by Léo Scheer. Galerie Léo Scheer |

Nina Korhonen. My American Grandma, 1993-1999, with the Photo Book of the Year Award 8 November - 14 January, 2007 Finnish artist Nina Korhonen has lived and worked in Sweden for 25 years. Her book describes the unique life of her grandmother, who emigrated to the United States: an ordinary-looking woman who poses without false modesty and shows a generous appetite for life, even at the age of 80. As well as Nina Korhonen's work, visitors will also have the opportunity to see all 55 of the books nominated for the Photo Book of the Year Award since 1996, when the Federation of Swedish photographers created the prize, as well as original prints by eleven of the winners. Jean-Baptiste Huynh. Le Regard à l'œuvre 24 October, 2006 - 14 January, 2007 The exhibition brings together portraits, still lives and landscapes made by Jean-Baptiste Huynh during his travels in Mali, India, Ethiopia, Japan, Vietnam, Cambodia, Egypt and France. It deals with three fundamental aspects of Jean-Baptiste Huynh's work: faces, travel and books. He has created eight books of portraits, and rightly considers the book to be a complete expression of his vision. Also on show will be a "virtual" book of pictures (shown as a screen projection), as well as models, Polaroids, portfolios and limited editions of the artist's work. Emmanuel Berry. Birds from Sens - A Hidden Collection 29 October - 8 January, 2007 This exhibition consists of pictures of antique stuffed birds from the collection of the museum in the town of Sens, which is now closed to the public. The artist has made photographic "portraits" of the birds, then enlarged them into painting-sized prints. They take on a new meaning, the birds appearing disturbingly alive. Jean-Christophe Béchet. Views n°0, A Photographic Manifesto 2 November - 23 December, 2006 Jean-Christophe Béchet shot his first reel of black-and-white film in 1980. From 1980 to January 2006, he shot 2,000 reels. A quarter of a century is revealed in the resulting 2,000 contact prints: a kind of private diary. Over the same period, photography has moved quickly and inevitably towards digital. Jean-Christophe Béchet's response has been to focus on the photos from the beginning of each film reel -- those half-veiled images that have a disturbing and poetic force all of their own. Nicolas Taffin and Michel Melot. The Book 8 November 2006 - 22 January, 2007 This exhibition explores the miracle of the book: an object born two thousand years ago, eminently modern thanks to its mathematical, cubic form, industrial before its time. It supplanted scrolls and became the "building block" of Western thought. Unlike the digital medium, the book has physical folds: it opens and closes. In books, the medium and the message are interlinked. A book's layout can be designed to give it authority, or even the potential to transcend. To understand the phenomenal power of the book, Michel Melot and Nicolas Taffin, a writer and a photographer, explore the way books are put together and examine their most private anatomy: their folds and seams, their physical and symbolic fibre. Masao Yamamoto. Nakazora, entre la terre et le ciel 10 November - 23 December, 2006 Japanese photography has a tradition of strong links with publishing and, during the 1960s and 1970s in particular, some remarkable photography books have appeared in Japan. Masao Yamamoto, born in 1957, is an outstanding example: the six books he has published (five at Nazraeli Press) are as important to his work as his prints and exhibitions. The singularity of Yamamoto's published work comes from his approach to space and time. Curator : Didier Brousse. Galerie Camera Obscura |

Desiree Dolron. Exaltation, Gaze, Xteriors 9 November - 20 December, 2006 Born in 1963, Desiree Dolron is one of the best-known Dutch artists working with photography, and has developed a unique style in both documentary and artistic work. Her series "Exaltation: Images of Religion and Death" (1991-1999) deals with excess in religious ceremonies, from exaltation to self-mutilation. "Gaze" (1996-1998) involves images of people underwater, peaceful portraits that seem to be of another, almost mythological world, blurring the boundaries between life and death. "XTERIORS" (2001-2006) presents portraits and situations inspired by the traditions of painting. There is something mysteriously, even disturbingly distant about Desiree Dolron's photographs. Jorma Puranen. Glacial Expanses 9 November - 14 December, 2006 "Glacial Expanses," Jorma Puranen's most recent photographic series, was inspired by tales he read of expeditions in Northern Europe during the 19th century and paintings of the same expeditions he found in museums in Versailles and Dieppe. He was also inspired by tourists he saw walking in the rugged hills of Nordkap, in Norway. Curators : Marjatta Levanto et Merja Laukia. Jakob Gautel. Maria Theodora 16 November 2006 - 14 février, 2007 It all began with family heirlooms passed down from generation to generation, including a personal diary with a photograph slipped between its pages. This yellowed photograph from the early 1860s shows a young woman: Maria Theodora, Jakob Gautel's great-great-grandmother. She has Asian features, but her dress and the setting are clearly Western. In 1834 her German father had become a doctor working for the Dutch Colonial government in Indonesia. Her mother was Indonesian, though her family was originally from China. Jacob Gautel went to Indonesia in search of memories of Maria Theodora. He returned from his travels with notes, pictures, a video and a series of photographs: all of them call out to Maria Theodora, and her presence can be felt everywhere. In conjunction with the exhibition, Filigranes publishers will present books produced with artists from the gallery. At the same time, a video screen presents interviews in which each artist discusses issues relating to his or her work and how important publication is to them. Curator : Christine Ollier. Zbigniew Libera. Nouvelles impressions d'Afrique Zbigniew Libera. Ce qui fait l'estafette 3 November - 25 November, 2006 9 November - 22 December, 2006 The Polish Institute and the Anne de Villepoix gallery present two original works by artist Zbigniew Libera (born in 1959), an important figure in Polish contemporary art. One of Libera's major preoccupations is the treatment of texts and images: he deconstructs the mechanisms of the symbolic power of pictures. His work is a rereading of codes and images that have been heavily represented in the media and which are becoming our new historical icons. Curator : Klaudia Podsiadlo Galerie Anne de Villepoix |

Jens Ullrich. Mnamni, Collages of Africa 18 October - 2 December, 2006 Jens Ullrich was born in Tanzania. Here he has taken present-day black and white newspaper photographs of daily life in Africa and glued old masks cut out of African art catalogues onto the people's faces. The photos have only been very slightly altered, and thus retain their persuasive power as authentic documentary records. Something quite surprising takes place in these pictures: African masks, kept for many years in western museums, have been "returned" to their country of origin and are here seen being "worn" by the descendants of those who made them. Donigan Cumming. Dozing, Sleep, Nightmare 10 November 2006 - 3 Febrary, 2007 Donigan Cumming's photographs inspire admiration as well as debate and controversy. For the past twenty years, he has been photographing and filming a community of people on the margins of society, depicting the pain and ugliness of their lives but also their moving, ridiculous and sometimes tragic fantasies. Here he presents two huge pictures (2,5 x 5 m) freely inspired by the paintings of Bruegel the Elder and James Ensor. Entitled Prologue and Epilogue, these photographic tableaux relate to the entire body of his work, and make up a kind of iconoclastic retrospective. Curator : Catherine Bédard.
