2 November - 31 December 2006

First held in November 2004, the European Month of Photography is a network of festivals held in seven cities (Berlin, Bratislava, Luxemburg, Moscow, Paris, Rome and Vienna). Its main purpose is to foster the international recognition of European artists and to provide collective responses to issues raised by the organization of photographic events.

"Mutations" (Transformations) is the first common project organized by the network. In two parts, it aims to present a broad overview of the work being done by young European photographers, highlighting the technological and artistic transformations taking place in the world of photography.

The first part, "Mutations 1", focuses on artists from the seven participating countries. It includes the work of AES+F (Russia), Nina Dick (Austria), Eva Frapiccini (Italy), Beate Gütschow (Germany), Elisabeth and Carine Krecké (Luxemburg), Marek Kvetan (Slovakia), and Philippe Ramette (France).

Their photos all reflect a desire to move into the territory of fiction, either historical (Eva Frapiccini), cinematographic (Elisabeth and Carine Krecké), videographic (Nina Dick), urban (Beate Gütschow) or related to advertising (Marek Kvetan).

From a formal point of view, most of them subvert reality, either via new technologies (AES+F) or performance (Philippe Ramette).

The seven artists were selected by a jury whose members are the artistic directors of the festivals, from a shortlist of 35 artists who are already recognized in their respective countries and who have produced innovative work involving elements of plasticity.

The exhibition will be presented in the seven festivals that jointly form the European Month of Photography, in the autumn of 2006 or the spring of 2007. In each case it is curated by the local exective director for the Month of Photography, and the selection of works on show will thus vary from country to country.

The Alcatel Group, as leading sponsor of the European Month of Photography, has also offered to fund a new award worth 10,000 euros. The Alcatel Prize for the Month of Photography will be awarded by an international jury of photography professionals to one of the seven artists showcased in the festival.

Curated by Jean-Luc Monterosso, director of the MEP.
Exhibition sponsored by Alcatel, CulturesFrance, and the Austrian Forum, in partnership with Le Monde 2.
