Joel Meyerowitz, Out of Ordinary

To coincide with the exhibition at the Jeu de Paume gallery (Hôtel de Sully) from 3 October 2006 to 14 January 2007, there will be a public discussion with special guest Joel Meyerowitz. The exhibition, the first ever held in Europe, consists of 120 colour photos he produced between 1970 and 1980. These ten years were a transitional period that he considers pivotal to his work and career, during which he reflected on the photographic medium, exploring new aesthetic avenues and developing a new style.

In 1988, the director was sued by a young girl he had photographed in the street. Ten years later, the 'Duclos Ruling' made it impossible for photographers to take pictures of people without prior permission. The film analyzes the consequences of this ruling on documentary photography, and raises the issue of image ownership rights.

The Louis-Lumière School celebrates its 80th anniversary

Saturday, 18 November, 2:00 pm - 7:45 pm

1926. Responding to a shortage of skilled technicians in the film and photography industry, a group of industrialists decided to create a school to train French students in relevant skills. A company was set up with Louis Lumière as chairman. Vice-president Léon Gaumont brought his extraordinary dynamism to the project. With the help of the State Education Department and the Paris Council, the school eventually opened on the rue de Vaugirard.

2006. Now a major public graduate school, the ENS Louis-Lumière continues to fulfil its original purpose: to foster the development of the image industry via an educational organization with the highest standards of excellence, and to respond to the needs of professionals while remaining true to the values of public higher education. The relationship between art and technology is fundamental to the school's approach, and it actively promotes research and artistic projects.

For its 80th anniversary, the École Nationale Supérieure Louis-Lumière presents a selection of work by former students in photography and film.

Paris, the City Centre?
A project by Bar Floréal Photography

A joint project by a photography collective (Bar Floréal) and a graphic design workshop (Nous Travaillons Ensemble). The Bar Floréal reaches out to residents of the 4th arrondissement by setting up outdoor studios in public places, including the Hôtel-Dieu hospital, the BHV department store, and the Sophie-Germain high school. Passers-by, local residents and tourists will have the opportunity to be photographed and to express themselves. The result will be a "portrait gallery" reflecting life in the area.

Shoe Stories: 100 Photographers for Handicap International
