Henri Cartier-Bresson and Walker Evans, Photographing America, 1929-1947

10 September 2008 - 21 December 2008

This exhibition shows in parallel the ways Walker Evans and Henri Cartier-Bresson looked at America. Both were imbued with a knowledge of literature, painting and a form of social criticism which manifested itself in different ways. This important and bold parallel shows how the frontality and distance of Evans' work on his own country contrast with Cartier-Bresson's diagonals focusing on human figures as he explored a territory that was still new to him. It is also an opportunity to celebrate the centenary of Henri Cartier-Bresson's birth by presenting him alongside a photographer whose work he greatly admired until the end of his life.
