Benoît Grimbert, A406 North Circular Road

10 November 2008 - 29 November 2008

Benôit Grimbert's photographic series are generally defined by placenames. If in this case he has opted for the name of a road, this is because it explicitly serves to identify an area: that of the northern periphery of London. The road acts as a common thread, appearing and disappearing in turn and outlining the city it runs around. The main artery linking the eastern and western sides of Greater London, it follows a route that has existed since the 1920s and has gradually come to resemble a motorway. An emblem of the generic city and of the globalization of urban forms, this road nonetheless has itw own territorial and cultural identity.
