Progress often occurs in leaps and bounds in several places at once; this was certainly true of early political photomontage. John Heartfield claimed to have invented the genre in May 1916, but in January of that year the first photomontages had appeared in the French magazine J'ai Vu. It is highly probable that Danish photographer and journalist Marinus Jacob Kjeldgaard was involved. Many years later, he was to become famous for his remarkable photomontages which, from 1932 to 1940, appeared on the front page of the Parisian weekly Marianne. This exhibition is an opportunity to discover an anti-Fascist voice in 1930s France, and to appreciate the way in which a talented photographer combined masterpieces of painting with press photos for popular movies in his montages.
