Transmigration: Four Mexican Photographers in Europe
19 November 2008 - 17 January 2009Transmigration: Four Mexican Photographers in Europe
In the second half of the 20th century, Mexican nationalism, then in decline, drifted into mere rhetoric. Significantly enough, its decline coincides with the emergence and consolidation of a generation of photographers, here represented by Flor Garduño, Cristina Kahlo, Raúl Ortega and Pablo Ortiz Monasterio, whose creative images drew from many different sources. By looking at the world, so to speak, through Mexican eyes, but with a constant openness to and awareness of what lies beyond, they perhaps unknowingly embrace one of the ideas upheld by Jorge Cuestra, one of the most important critics of the modernization of Mexican society, who precisely established the parameters of cultural universality in Mexico.
