Jackie Nickerson, Faith

30 October - 19 December 2008

The result of a long period of ork in a number of Catholic religious comunities, Faith is a portrait of a hidden world. A group of Carmelite nuns initially gave Jackie Nickerson the idea for the project, and she focused her attention on capturing the inner life of religious people. She was also inspired by a painting from 1500, "Portrait of a Monk in Prayer", a painting of a bust in semi-profile in which materials and light are treated with great delicacy. Harking back to these Renaissance traits, Nickerson's photographs possess a special atmosphere that conveys both a sense of meditative calm and the austerity of the subjects' lives.
