Post-War Photographs

13 November 2008 - 10 January 2009

Anyone who knows that Werner Bischof was the most briliant pupil of the Kunst Gewerbe Schule in Zurich, and anyone familiar with his early work, will no doubt be surprised to discover the reportage work he did in post-war Europe. Commissioned by the director of the magazine DU, Werner Bischof travelled through Germany, Hungary and Poland immediately after the war. He had been lucky enough to spend his childhood in Switzerland, and these countires devastated by war with their emaciated inhabitants showed him the meaning of atrocious poverty and loss of dignity. His outstanding artistic sensitivity and his unsentimental compassion make Bischof one of the greatest photographers of his time.
