John Bulmer worked successively for the Daily Express, the fashion monthly Town Magazine, and the Sunday Times before taking his career in a new direction and turning towards documentary film making. In the 60s and 70s he photographed the streets and people of Manchester and northern mining towns, placing himself in the tradition of social reportage and humanist photography. He seeks to transmit information and denounce situations while paying meticulous attention to the aesthetic and graphic aspects of his compositions.
