Françoise Spiekermeier, Femmes tchétchènes
4 November 2008 - 30 November 2008Françoise Spiekermeier went to Chechnya in August 1999 to produce a series of reportage photographs for Paris Match. She approached members of the resistance network and closely followed their struggle, working in close contact with them. Most were women. From this time spent with the clandestine resistance she brought back a series of compelling, subtle portraits that reveal the true faces of Chechen women. Young girls with their futures stolen from them, students standing in the ruins, widows, mothers, woman fighters, suicide bombers…all experience the war according to their own choices. With deep respect and lest we forget, the intention is to record a human disaster and to help the Chechens to appropriate their true history at a time when Europe is in the process of expanding its frontiers.
