The Whale's Footprint

26 October - 29 November 2008

In 2005 Thierry Secretan started taking photographs of extremely spare landscapes, either in the open sea or near the coast. They are part of an investigation of the senses and a search for a feeling of literally primal harmony when standing alone in a completely intact natural environment. In the Azores, a whale appeared in front of his boat, then suddenly disappeared, leaving a perfect circle on the surface of the water. If it hadn't been for this calm, almost oily circle spreading slowly further and further out - biologists call it a footprint - he would have wondered if his eyes had been playing tricks on him.
The whale used to be one of the most famous mythical beasts - and later became one of the most hunted. Today, near these volcanic islands where whales come to mate, the encounter is at last a peaceful one.
