Finistère: Where the Land Ends, 1988-2008

8 November - 12 December 2008

For almost 20 years Mat Jacob has been taking photographs of Milizac, the village in Finistère, Brittany where he was born and briefly lived. His work examines the bonds by which we are united and defined. The notion of origin is reflected in this recent piece of work carried out in collaboration with the Centre Atlantique de la Photographie in Brest. It is a series of pictures made during a number of deliberately random journeys to the heart of Finistère in all its human, social and geographic diversity. Dimensions are juxtaposed; contrasts convey meaning. The geographical reality of Finistère, the 'end of the land', gradually disappears, giving way to vibrant emotion and a sense of freedom. The photographer travels through the region collecting stories and recording traces. He slowly picks up the threads of the past and looks for signs of the present.
