Igor Savchenko, The Picture behind him
6 November - 13 December 2008Igor Savchenko stigmatizes the changes taking place in Europe in works that are methodical, anaylitical and incidentally terrifying As we explore his pictures - which are also the pictures of our history, depicting a pre-atomic era of apparently brutal simplicity - as we look at the artist's grotesque distortions, we are seized by feelings akin to angst and radical terror. On the pretext of showing us the mystery of an image, the very essence of an era banally depicted in conventional poses and peopled by characters devoid of drama, Savchenko aims to be the stage-manager of a story we know to be a tragic one, the harbinger of human catastrophes that render the little details of everyday life that feature in his photos derisory and strange.
