Mohamed Bourouissa, Périphéries
30 October - 22 November 2008Mohammed Bourouissa is a young artist who has chosen to set his photographs in a world that is familiar to him: the Paris suburbs and the people who live there. As he travels through the neighbourhoods of La Courneuve, Pantin and Argenteuil he notices cul-de-sacs, entrances to apartment buildings, car parks and other no-man's-lands he can use as backgrounds for carefully stage-managed scenes put together with the aid of sketches and notes. His models, youngsters he meets when scouting for locations, are asked to pose and play roles, involving themselves entirely in the project which soon goes beyond a mere 'shoot' and instead becomes a true collective event. Bourouissa reappropriates subjects that have been made into clichés by the media and which are usually the domain of photojournalism, offering a new vision of what might be termed "peripheral".
