Clark et Pougnaud, Étrange Europe
Strange Europe

21 October - 19 December 2008

The photographs of Clark and Pougnaud are unusual in that they initially appear to be simple studio portraits but are in fact strange and sophisticated staged images using miniature sets. They have their models adopt stiff poses that emphasize the strangeness of the scene, and this artificiality only serves to make the pictures more troubling. The sets are pared down to the bare essentials: they are purely symbolic. They are designed like stage backdrops providing the setting for a story, or photonovellas from which single images have been selected, seeking to stimulate the imagination of the viewer.
