Peter Martensen, Testing freedom
23 October - 2 December 2008Confusing, disturbing, touching and often humorous, the subtle, powerful world of Peter Martensen captivates us with its evocation of familiar yet strange situations. The human being at the centre of this world is a kind of clone. Far from 'psychological' portraits, the artist offers neutral figures which invite us to project our own interpretations. They form an open-ended narrative whose settings seem to be from the post-war period but whose subjects are closely linked to present realities. With Martensen, the relationship between form and content is a constant preoccupation reflected in his use of different art forms, with accomplished 'classical' figurative paintings produced in parallel with ongoing and highly advanced work in photography, video and music. In this dialogue between various media, a complex and highly personal world, teeming with references and associations, has gradually taken shape.
