Lovers of contemporary art are increasingly interested in photography, and Italian collectors Anna Rosa and Giovani Cotroneo are no exception. In the early 1980s they began collecting period art, especially Neapolitan works from the 17th and 18th centuries, and then became interested in living artists such as Polke, Richter, Paladino and Sol Lewitt. For the last fifteen years they have been collecting photographs.
The collection is highly international, but as the exhibition is part of An Italian Summer this naturally led the organizers to select work by contemporary Italian photographers.
The first part of the exhibition shows work by well-known photographers, though some of their photos are shown here for the first time. The second part is devoted to young photographers, and photographers whose careers have been closely related to major trends in contemporary Italian art. The couple often sponsor art projects and provide backing for artists, and the exhibition ends with a new installation specially produced at their request for the MEP, a new work by Roman artist Alfredo Pirri. Bathed in interactive light whose colour and intensity constantly changes, this glass and marble piece can be seen as a subtle metaphor for photography.
Exhibition sponsored by iGuzzini, Adn Kronos, Alcatel and the Oredaria Arti Contemporane Gallery in Rome.
