Germany, 1980's
Main aspects of German contemporary
photography in the collections of the National Foundation
for Contemporary Art and the Maison Européenne de la
Photographie permanent collection
German photography has frequently received a less than warm welcome in France. The development of French public collections as of the beginning of the 1980s nevertheless accompanied the emergence of a new generation of artists who matured under the influence of a few masters and their teachings. The aesthetics of these artists emanate from the particular use they make of their camera. It is not a common style which brings these photographers together, but their way of seeing, be it romantic or objective.
They often emphasise the triviality of our environment and our contemporary world, with coldness, distance or irony. This exhibit is an opportunity to unveil the wealth of two public French collections of German contemporary photography, and to emphasise their complementarity.
