Bouna Medoune Seye : "La cour de Joe"

Born 1956 in Dakar, where he now lives

Dakar, Sénégal, circa 1990

Bouna Medoune Seye studied in Marseille before returning to live in his native town of Dakar. Along with Djibril Sy, Moussa Mbaye, Boubacar Touré Mandémory and Touré Béhan, he has endeavoured to affirm the identity of African art photography. His photography, often esthetically disconcerting thanks to its unusual composition and framing, is a reflection of his own strongly original personality.

Along with Bernard Hosti, he organized the 1992 "Month of Photography" in Dakar. It was thanks to Bouna Medoune Seye that the public discovered the work of Mama Casset, the old portraitist from the Muslim quarter of Dakar.

Through painting, photography and cinema, Bouna seeks to express a feeling of uncertainty about the world he lives in. In 1994 he made his first short film, "Bandit-cinéma", followed by "Saï Saï By" in 1995.
