Esther et Jochen Gerz : "REASONS TO SMILE", 1996

At the end of 1997, the European House of Photography called upon the creativity of its public, for the first time in its young history.

In a first exhibit by Esther and Jochen Gerz, in which appear three fragments of REASONS TO SMILE (Tallahasssee, Göttlingen and Arles), The European House of Photography offered its visitors the chance to participate in a new fragment. Two hundred rolls of film were distributed for free. The invitation was extended to readers of LibČration and to the inhabitants of Parisí 4th district.
Thanks to the contribution of numerous participants, Esther and Jochen Gerz were able to produce this work, which enriches the collection of the European House of Photography.

REASONS TO SMILE is developing thanks to the increasing participation of people from various environments and origins, each time seeking out a different identity (publication, exhibit, workshop, Internet, press, public place, etc.).

The following fragments have been produced thanks to the collaboration of passersby (FIAC 1996, Paris), researchers from the Max-Planck Institute of Historical Studies (Göttlingen, Germany), students from Florida State University of Tallehassee (United States), visitors to the Catriona Jeffries Gallery in Vancouver (Canada), the inhabitants of Arles, the women from the Isle of Ouessant, readers of the International Letter in Berlin, and of the daily newspaper, Libération, in France.
