Miller LEVY: "L'Aprèshistoire"
From 24th November 1999 to 9th January 2000, the Maison Européenne de la Photographie presents a selection of photographs and videos by Miller Levy.
The exhibition entitled "L'Aprèshistoire" includes the artist's most recent piece (entitled L'Aprèshistoire) as well as examples of his earlier work. The overall theme is the subject of writing. Once again, Miller Levy focuses on questions of logic and self-mockery.
Miller Levy defines himself as a "variety artist", in the sense that what he does is very varied. This means he approaches contemporary art from many different angles: painting , sculpture, video, drawing, installations, photography, etc.
His work is a kind of poetic, playful and humorous scale model of reality
Like a light-hearted conjuror, Miller Levy juggles with images and "takes the world at its word".
In this new series of photographs, "l'Aprèshistoire", Miller Levy assumes the role of an archaeologist, using an endoscope to explore used ballpoint pen cartridges as if they were empty, abandoned passages in ancient ruins. The artist considers that these cartridges, which have never been totally emptied, remain charged with the potential for words and ideas. By photographing them, he introduces us to a strange period he calls "l'Aprèshistoire" ("Afterhistory"), a period of discovery that remains full of mystery now that it has been abandoned.
Miller Levy was born in 1950 in Cairo. He lives and works in Paris.
