STUDIO INTERVIEW #10 — Chia Huang
Dive into the world of artist Chia Huang in a discussion with the exhibition curator, Aden Vincendeau.
For six months, the photographer immersed herself in the daily life of this family, capturing their inner world through a hybrid approach that combines documentary photography, amateur drawings, and family archives. Unable to use verbal language, the two brothers nonetheless develop, at the heart of their profound silence, a constant inner dialogue. Adopting a collaborative approach to photography, Chia Huang pays particular attention to the children’s drawings and sketches, incorporating them into her project and weaving them throughout her work. Despite the absence of speech, the two brothers have developed a prolific drawing practice, covering the walls of their home with their creations.
With Silence Is Speaking, the artist explores the confusion and suffering of this family as they navigate the expectations of Taiwanese society, which remains shaped by traditional codes. Her sensitive images reveal the silent communication between the two brothers, highlighting their body language and documenting “the silent sound hidden behind their being.”
Born in 1990 in Taiwan, Chia Huang is a visual artist currently in her final year at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris and a graduate of the Villa Arson in Nice. Her work incorporates photography, painting, collage, and video. Following individuals living on the margins of society, she develops a collaborative practice with her subjects, creating collective projects that combine documentary photography and amateur drawings.
She has exhibited at the Rencontres d’Arles, Palais de Tokyo, Luma Arles, MoCA Taipei, Taipei Performing Arts Center, and the Beaux-Arts de Paris. In 2024, she was awarded the Dior Prize for Photography and Visual Arts.
