Confinement

Maison Européenne de la Photographie
from 18 November 1998 to 31 January 1999

Enfermement photographique ('Photographic Confinement') by Bernard Lamarche-Vadel

Photography is an art of imprisonment. More than anyone else, photographers provide clues and images; they make a statement. Confinement flourishes within the global religion of numbers. In the hope that to organize is to resist, this exhibition, designed as a 'ballad' or a 'poetics' of confinement, has a moral dimension.

Exhibition curated by Bernard Lamarche-Vidal, assisted by Pascal Hoël & Ghyslaine Badezet.
Set design : Bernard Lamarche-Vidal & Jean-Philippe Reverdot

Catalogue published by Paris Audiovisuel / Maison Européenne de la Photographie.

Klavdij Sluban et les jeunes détenus de Fleury-Mérogis : "Les lieux d'un piège" ('Where the Trap is')

Space and time are at the heart of Klavdij Sluban's work. His project on prison life, begun in 1995, illustrates this perfectly.

The idea that one should not only take but also give led Klavdij Sluban to set up photography workshops at a prison for young offenders at Fleury-Mérogis, in the Paris suburbs. This made it possible for adolescents to reappropriate the prison via the camera lens. Henri Cartier-Bresson, Marc Riboud and William Klein have actively encouraged this different approach to everyday experience.

Parc de la Villette - Maison de la Villette
from 29 October 1998 to 31 January 1999

Jane Evelyn Atwood : "Trop de peines, femmes en prison ('Too much Punishment: Women in Prison')

Over a period of nine years, the photojournalist Jane Evelyn Atwood met and photographed woman prisoners in several eastern and western European countries and in America. These photographs have the same strengths as her previous reportage: a spirit of total commitment, and a closeness bordering on intimacy with her subjects, imprisoned either for minor offences involving theft or drugs or for crimes such as murder or infanticide.

Exhibition curated by Robert Pledge & Gabriel Bauret

Toshio Shibata : "Terre et Paysages (Japon)" ('Land and Landscapes: Japan')

In his meticulous depiction of natural landscapes in Japan that have been deeply affected by the hand of man, Shibata turns his back on the traditional meaning of the landscape. With a coldly objective eye, he emphasizes the negative effects of civilisation on the environment.

Exhibition curated by Régis Durand
With the support of the Fondation du Japon

Toshio Shibata : "Le terrain d'élection des métamorphoses"

While seeking places in America where the artificial and the natural meet, Toshi Shibata came across locations where public works have attempted to master the environment. Using his own preferred techniques (large-scale formats and ultra-fine detail, elimination of the horizon, unusual perspectives), he transforms the landscape into a huge abstract composition.

Orlan : "Refiguration"

The photographs in this exhibition were produced on computer via e-mail. These works are designed as hybrids resulting from a mixture of Orlan's own images and images of Maya and Olmec Indian sculptures exemplifying contemporary esthetic canons.

Exhibition curated by Yvonamor Palix

Galerie J & J Donguy
from 4 November to 5 December 1998

Orlan : "Ceci est mon corps" ('This is my Body')

Orlan moved from body art in the 70s to what she came to term 'carnal art', using her body as a raw material for her creations. Since 1990 she has used surgeons' instruments as tools, overseeing their use in the operating theatre and thus working directly on her own flesh. These surgical operations are videotaped, and several photographic works have been produced in the form of triptychs, combining seductive cibachromes with coldly objective black and white images taken after the operation.

Exhibition curated by Jacques Donguy
