Le Liban intime, photographies 1850-1960 ('Lebanon from Within, Photographs 1850-1960')

Local professional or amateur photographers provide an insider's view of how Lebanese society has evolved. These photographs, brought together by the Fondation arabe pour l'Image, reveal moments and memories of a past that seems both close and distant. The exhibition includes around 100 images shown in their original format.

Exhibition curated by Mona Khazindar, Fouad Elkoury & Samer Mohadad

Catalogue published by the Fondation arabe pour l'Image and the Institut du Monde Arabe.

Edouard Boubat : "Lella"

Who better than Boubat to share moments of joy with us? Lella is the photographic story of a first meeting.
'When people ask me what my secret is, I should reply : I cherish beginnings, blue-skied mornings in a foreign town; a new hunger'. "En avant: Route." Rimbaud.

In poetry there are no beginnings or endings. Photography shares this privilege. Simply seizing the moment.
Edouard Boubat

Bernard Plossu : "Françoise"

...these photographs of Françoise... they speak of the feeling of love, of tenderness, of life together with our children. Except for two taken with an instamatic, with Françoise running after the children on a beach in Andalusia, the place of her roots, all the photographs were taken with a 50mm lens on my old Nikkormat, because this lens gets closest to "normal" vision (!) : no effects, just reality as it presents itself, with its direct poetry, day or night; with the rain or the sun, travelling, sleeping, looking at each other, photographing each other.

A book (also entitled "Françoise") is published by Mestizo, Murcia, Spain.

Bernard Plossu will be showing his photographs at the Espace Photographique Contretype in Brussels from 24 December 1998 to 4 January 1999.

Yves Guillot : "La Logeuse et le Vert Luisant"

"For 10 years, I worked on a series of photos whose generic title, 'La Logeuse' ('The Landlady'), also to be used for a book, was intended to reflect the vague, open-ended nature of the project: simple objects of interiority, the way they interact and the idea of the circle they appear to trace... ...'Le Vert Luisant' ('Glowing Green'), saw the return of human presences in a new series that acts as a counterpoint to 'La Logeuse'".

The photos themselves are 'vintage photographs', the property of the M.E.P. and of a private collector.

Companion volume published by Marval
Exhibition sponsored by Leica & Agfa.

Sergio Larrain : "Londres" ('London')

"A good picture is born of a state of grace. This happens when one is freed from conventions, free as a child discovering reality for the first time. The name of the game is then to organize the rectangle."
