Cook – Conditioned

For Michael Cook, photography is a means of reimagining and rewriting. As a member of the Bidjara people of south-western Queensland, Cook’s visual language is embedded in questions of what was, what is, what might have been, and what could be. ‘Conditioned’ draws upon key series from his previous work to prise open histories and imaginaries that simmer between Indigenous and European experiences, perspectives, and consciousness, punctuated by abstracted texts and phraseology. The images – at the same time sumptuous and stark, historical and speculative, playful and political – invite us on a journey of reflection, resistance, and freewheeling imagination.
