Oshika Kabuki is a local theatre tradition in the village of Oshika in Japan’s Nagano Prefecture that has continued for more than 300 years. Its origins are unclear, but the tradition has been passed down through changing times. This timespan is connected to the present, yet invisible to the human eye. That inspired Masanori Hata to attempt to communicate with somewhere a little removed from this time and this place. But how? Hata started by recruiting photographers, models, and others from among the village’s inhabitants. This created a way of looking at the same place and the same time from a variety of perspectives, a process that generated more than 5,000 photographs.
