Philipp Adolphe Klier and D.A. Ahuja were two of the most significant image-makers of early colonial Myanmar. Their photographs have been reproduced and reinterpreted over the decades in various forms, yet surprisingly little is known about their lives. While much of their original work survives today only as reproductions, these images remain an integral part of Myanmar’s visual heritage. We must ask ourselves: what do these photographs truly reveal about life in Myanmar a century ago?
