‘Scenes of Absence’ begins with the inevitable death of Yuhki Touyama’s grandmother, whom she moves in with to care for her in her final months. There is not much she can do besides keep the house clean, spend time with her, and make sure meals taste good. None of this, however, is reflected in these photographs. Instead, we see snapshots of trees and sidewalks, other people’s gardens and flowerpots, a beautiful shadow pattern on a grey wall, and various trivial sights and scenes Touyama encountered as she walked around the neighbourhood. Each of her snapshots, each small detail that caught her eye, no matter how insignificant, seems to glow with appreciation.
